We are here, 2021,
acrylic on canvas, 200 × 200 cm
In the work We Are Here, the artist explores the power and visibility of civil society through the multiplied silhouette of her own body. This repetition creates the impression of numerous standing figures, each subtly differentiated by pastel shades that blend and layer. In this way, Lednarová blurs the distinctions that society often emphasizes while simultaneously using her body as an archetypal symbol of the human being.
Horizontal black lines—the imprints of the artist’s wheelchair tires—disrupt the softness of the color layers and symbolize obstacles and social limitations. Nevertheless, the figures standing within this space appear proud and upright, evoking perseverance, dignity, and resilience of both the individual and the community. The work thus reflects the theme of collective strength and individual integrity in the context of societal barriers.
