The Essence of Otherness, 2022

acrylic on canvas, 3200 × 2000 mm

In this work, the artist transforms her electric wheelchair into a painting instrument, tracing the colors of the Pride flag across the monumental canvas as a gesture of equality and acceptance. At the threshold of the composition appears a three-quarter silhouette of the artist’s own body, as if entering the pictorial space. This deliberate representation of partiality evokes the way society often perceives those who diverge from its constructed norms—as incomplete, deficient, or not fully belonging. Yet in the act of stepping into the field of the flag, the figure reclaims this fragmentariness as a sign of identity and resistance. The painting thus stages a dialectic between exclusion and inclusion, absence and presence, ultimately affirming otherness as a fundamental aspect of human existence.
