Signs & Locations – Global Culture
Digital print on plexiglass, 400 × 600 cm, 2010
Signs & Locations – Global Culture presents a possible vision of the future, transforming the image of the world through the lens of global processes. The central theme of the work is writing as a carrier of cultural belonging and identity. The artist depicts the world through twelve officially recognized writing systems within national contexts shaped by historical, religious, and political factors. The work aims to offer a perspective on the world not merely through political divisions, but primarily from a cultural standpoint.
The map is divided into 144 equal segments, each created using a combination of the twelve writing systems. The systems are layered in varying sequences, producing an apparently homogeneous image in which subtle differences emerge upon closer inspection, arising from the variable layering.
The work conveys a message of hope: that despite global processes, cultural identity and heritage endure and are not suppressed.
